For those of you who love the character and personality of an older home, but aren't exactly sure which architectural style is right for you, here's a bit more information to assist you:
Characteristics of Atlanta Georgia's historic homes:
- Bungalows - Typically built between 1915 and 1935, these single story homes feature 8.5 to 10 foot ceilings, "mission-style" front door, wood windows, hardwood floors and the main living spaces (living, dining, kitchen) on one side and the bedrooms on the other half of the home. Many of the bungalow style homes also include a rocking chair front porch. Read more about Craftsman Bungalows.
Popular Bungalow Neighborhoods in Atlanta:
Ansley Park, Buckhead, Grant Park, Ormewood Park, Kirkwood, East Lake, Oakhurst, Old Fourth Ward and Virginia Highlands.
- Victorian-era homes - Built between 1840 and 1915, Victorian homes have a grand presence on any Atlanta street. The earlier Victorians were simple in style, but in the late 1890s, the style became a bit more ornate, characterized by steep gables, "Gingerbread" wood detailing, pointed windows, and vibrant colors inside and out. Like the bungalows, these homes feature hardwood floors, fireplaces, very high ceilings (9 to 12 feet) and a large front porch is quite common.
Popular Victorian-era Neighborhoods in Atlanta:
Inman Park and Grant Park are home to some picture-perfect Victorian era homes, but there are a select few in other Intown Atlanta Neighborhoods, including Ormewood Park, Kirkwood and Decatur.
- Tudor style homes - Built between 1930 and 1945, Tudor homes have quite a bit of personality inside and out. On the exterior, the roof line is steeply pitched in one or more places, the windows have many small panes and the door way is arched. Many Tudors have a covered porch on the front side of the home. Inside, you'll find hardwood floors, fireplace(s) and 8.5 to 10 ft ceilings.
Popular Tudor-style Neighborhoods in Atlanta:
Morningside, Lenox Park, and Virginia Highland neighborhoods are usually the best place to find a Tudor. There are also several up and coming neighborhoods, such as Sylvan Hills, Adair Park and East Lake.
